A short history of the area
Manchester received a town charter in 1301 and became a city in 1853. The Bridgewater Canal opened in 1761, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway began in 1830, and the Manchester Ship Canal opened in 1894. These developments helped make Manchester one of the world's first industrialized cities.
The Church here
- 1837Seven missionaries, including two members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, arrived in England on July 19. They preached in Preston on July 23, and nine converts were baptized on July 30.
- 1837Fifty more converts were baptized in England the following week.
- 1837–1900As many as 100,000 British converts emigrated to join the main body of the Church in the United States.
- 1837The first branch in England was created in Preston on August 6.
- 1976The England Leeds Mission was divided to create the England Manchester Mission on July 1.
- 1998The Preston England Temple opened in June, near the site of the first preaching in England.
- 2013The first official Church Pageant outside North America was held in the United Kingdom on the grounds of the Preston Temple.
- 2020The England Manchester Mission broadcast its first virtual devotional on April 12 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
