About the mission

The Ghana Sunyani Mission is based in Sunyani, Ghana, a regional center in the country’s forest and farming area. Missionary work began in Sunyani in 2010, when groups were organized in several communities.

English and Twi are spoken in the mission. English is widely used in education and public life, while Twi is an important local language.

A short history of the area

Sunyani was a popular camping ground for elephant hunters in the late 19th century. In 1924, the British established a district headquarters there, and a road to Kumasi helped the city grow as an economic center.

An airstrip built in 1942 was used by the Allies during World War II and later became Sunyani Airport. Sunyani was voted Ghana’s cleanest city in 2007 by the Ghana Tourism Authority.

The Church here

  1. 1960sGhanaians who had read the Book of Mormon and gained testimonies petitioned Church leaders to organize branches in Ghana. Local believers also established independent congregations.
  2. 1978President Spencer W. Kimball received a revelation extending priesthood ordination to all worthy men and directed that missionaries be sent to Ghana.
  3. 1978Hundreds of believers were baptized, branches were organized, and a mission was established in Ghana.
  4. 1989–90The government banned the activities of several religious organizations, including the Church.
  5. 1998President Gordon B. Hinckley visited Ghana and announced that a temple would be built in Accra.
  6. 2004The Accra Ghana Temple was dedicated.
  7. 2010Missionaries from the Ghana Cape Coast Mission began work in Sunyani. Groups were organized in Estates, Nkwabeng, and Penkwase, followed soon by a group in Fiapre.
