A short history of the area
Kempe Gowda I established the city proper in 1537 and built a mud-brick fort. British forces captured Bengaluru Fort on March 21, 1791, during the Third Anglo-Mysore War. In 1949, the old Pete and British Cantonment joined one urban administration. Bengaluru is also known as the Garden City of India and the Silicon Valley of India.
The Church here
- 1849The restored gospel reached India through tracts from Orson Hyde and preaching by Latter-day Saint sailors.
- 1851The first missionaries arrived, several people were baptized, and a small branch began in Kolkata.
- 1856The mission closed after more than 300 Europeans and Indians had joined the Church.
- 1954S. Paul Thiruthuvadoss was converted by a pamphlet found in a used book store and began preaching near Coimbatore.
- 1961Elder Spencer W. Kimball baptized Mangal Dan Dipty in New Delhi, the first baptism in independent India.
- 1978Edwin and Elsie Dharmaraju established a branch in Hyderabad while serving as missionaries in their homeland.
- 1993The India Bangalore Mission was organized, with Gurcharan Singh Gill as its first mission president.
- 2012The first stake in India was organized in Hyderabad by President Dallin H. Oaks.
