A short history of the area
Construction began after World War I and was completed by 1931. New Delhi was inaugurated on February 13, 1931, by Viceroy and Governor-General Irwin. Today, it is the seat of all three branches of the Government of India.
The Church here
- 1849The restored gospel reached India through tracts from Orson Hyde and preaching by Latter-day Saint sailors.
- 1851The first missionaries arrived in India.
- 1856The mission closed after more than 300 Europeans and Indians had joined the Church.
- 1961Elder Spencer W. Kimball baptized Mangal Dan Dipty in New Delhi, the first baptism in independent India.
- 1978Edwin and Elsie Dharmaraju, expatriate Indians called as missionaries to their homeland, established a branch in Hyderabad.
- 1993The first mission in India, the India Bangalore Mission, was organized.
- 2007The India New Delhi Mission was organized on November 1, covering northern India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.
- 2012The first stake in India was organized in Hyderabad.
