A short history of the area
The city grew around Cape Mesurado and the Mesurado River, an area traditionally inhabited by Vai, Dey, Kru, Bassa, and Gola communities. Monrovia later endured severe damage during Liberia's civil wars and was affected by the West Africa Ebola outbreak in 2014 and 2015.
The Church here
- 1985Joe C. Jarwleh read the Book of Mormon and shared it with members of the Temple of Christ Church.
- 1987The Church was officially recognized in Liberia, and senior missionaries arrived.
- 1987On July 3, J. Duffy and Jocelyn Palmer, the first missionary couple assigned to Liberia, arrived in Monrovia.
- 1987Church units were organized in New Kru Town and Congo Town on August 23.
- 1987On December 2, the New Kru Town and Congo Town groups became branches after more than 300 members had been baptized since August.
- 1988The Liberia Monrovia Mission was organized on March 1, with J. Duffy Palmer as president.
- 1990Proselytizing was suspended in Liberia because of the First Liberian Civil War, and mission headquarters were moved from Monrovia to Freetown.
- 1991The Liberia Monrovia Mission was dissolved, and Liberia became part of the Ghana Accra Mission.
- 2015Latter-day Saints helped provide food, cooking oil, and sanitation supplies during the Ebola outbreak.
