A short history of the area
The city has grown into a major tourist destination. Hurricanes Gilbert in 1988 and Wilma in 2005 caused serious damage, while 21 million tourists visited Cancún in 2023.

- 1875The Church sent its first missionaries to Mexico after portions of the Book of Mormon began to be translated into Spanish.
- 1877Missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
- 1901The Mexican Mission was reopened with Ammon M. Tenney as mission president.
- 1945Mexican Latter-day Saints became the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English when they traveled to Mesa, Arizona.
- 1961A stake was organized in Mexico City.
- 1983A temple was dedicated in Mexico City.
- 2013The Mexico Cancún Mission was created.
