A short history of the area
Mérida became an important center for Church activity in the region. Congregations and missionaries were established on the Yucatán Peninsula in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

- 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
- 1960sThe Church established congregations and assigned missionaries to the Yucatán Peninsula for the first time.
- 1975The Mexico Merida Mission was created to serve the Yucatán Peninsula.
- 1977The Church created its first stake in Yucatán State in Mérida.
- 1983The Church translated selected passages of the Book of Mormon into Maya.
- 2000The Mérida Mexico Temple was among the temples dedicated in Mexico that year.
