A short history of the area
The settlement was first called Pitic and was renamed Hermosillo in 1828 in honor of insurgent leader José María González de Hermosillo. Hermosillo became the capital of Sonora in 1879. Today, the city is known for its hot desert climate and its major Ford stamping and assembly plant.
The Church here
- 1875Brigham Young called six missionaries to begin preaching in Mexico with Spanish Church materials.
- 1877Missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo after portions of the Book of Mormon had been translated into Spanish.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City, and the Mexican Mission was formally organized.
- 1901The Mexican Mission reopened on June 8 with Ammon M. Tenney as mission president.
- 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
- 1945Mexican Latter-day Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English for the first time in Church history.
- 1961A stake was organized in Mexico City, the first Spanish-speaking stake in the Church.
- 1976The Hermosillo Mexico Mission was organized on October 8.
- 1983A temple was dedicated in Mexico City.
