A short history of the area
In 1824, Nuevo León became a state and Monterrey was chosen as its capital. The city later became a major industrial center. Monterrey sits at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental and is recognized by the distinctive Cerro de la Silla, or Saddle Mountain.
The Church here
- 1870sMexico’s growing religious liberty encouraged Brigham Young to take the restored gospel to Mexico.
- 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch of the Church was organized in Mexico City.
- 1936–1946Tensions with returning mission leadership led to a painful schism in Mexico before members were reconciled.
- 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
- 1945Mexican Latter-day Saints became the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English.
- 1961A stake was organized in Mexico City, the first Spanish-speaking stake in the Church.
- 1983A temple was dedicated in Mexico City.
- 2015Mexico had 13 temples by the end of the year.
