A short history of the area
The present city of Tampico was founded on April 13, 1823, after Mexico gained independence from Spain. Tampico later became a major oil-exporting port, and its history includes the 1914 Tampico Affair and the 1938 nationalization of Mexico’s oil industry.
The Church here
- 1875Brigham Young called six missionaries to begin preaching in Mexico using newly translated Spanish Church materials.
- 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
- 1950The first missionaries came to Tampico.
- 1972The Tampico Mexico Stake was organized.
- 1988The Mexico Tampico Mission was created from the Mexico City North and Mexico Monterrey missions.
- 1995The Tampico Bosque Mexico Stake was organized.
- 2000The Tampico México Temple was dedicated on May 20 by Thomas S. Monson.
