A short history of the area
A Franciscan convent was completed in 1555. Xalapa became a town in 1791 and a city in 1830. Its mountain setting, mild climate, flowers, and cultural life have given it names such as the City of Flowers and the Athens of Veracruz.

- 1870sReligious liberty in Mexico encouraged Brigham Young to send the restored gospel to Mexico.
- 1877After parts of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
- 1936–1946Tensions with returning mission leadership led to a painful schism before Mexican members were reconciled.
- 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
- 1945Mexican Latter-day Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, and became the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English.
- 1961The first stake in Mexico was organized in Mexico City.
- 1983A temple was dedicated in Mexico City.
- 2012The Mexico Xalapa Mission was created by dividing the Mexico Veracruz Mission.
