A short history of the area
Veracruz played an important role in Mexico’s struggle for independence. Spanish troops continued occupying San Juan de Ulúa until 1823, and the city received its first title of “heroic city” in 1826. During the Mexican-American War, Veracruz surrendered after a 20-day siege in 1847.

- 1870sReligious liberty in Mexico encouraged Brigham Young to begin planning for the restored gospel to be taken to Mexico.
- 1877After portions of the Book of Mormon were translated into Spanish, missionaries baptized the first converts in Hermosillo.
- 1879A branch was organized in Mexico City.
- 1944Temple ordinances were translated into Spanish.
- 1945Mexican Saints traveled to Mesa, Arizona, and became the first in Church history to receive temple ordinances in a language other than English.
- 1961A stake was organized in Mexico City.
- 1963The Southeast Mexican Mission was organized and was later renamed the Mexico Veracruz Mission.
- 1983A temple was dedicated in Mexico City.
