A short history of the area

Managua began as a pre-Columbian fishing town. It was incorporated in 1819 as Leal Villa de Santiago de Managua and became Nicaragua’s capital in 1852 because its location between León and Granada offered a practical compromise.

Earthquakes have strongly shaped the city. A major earthquake destroyed much of Managua in 1931. On December 23, 1972, another earthquake destroyed 90 percent of downtown and killed more than 19,120 people. Much of the city was later cleared and rebuilt.

1953The first missionaries arrived in Nicaragua as part of the Central America Mission.
1954The first convert in Nicaragua was baptized.
1959The first Nicaraguan district was organized.
September 1978Missionaries left Nicaragua because of civil war.
Late 1980sChurch missionary work resumed in Nicaragua.
1987A group of Church members traveled by bus to the Guatemala City Temple.
October 15, 1989The Nicaragua Managua Mission was organized in Managua.
1990Church membership in Nicaragua reached 8,000 by the end of the year.
2010A second mission was created, and the Nicaragua Managua North and South Missions were established.
