A short history of the area
Earthquakes strongly shaped the city. A major earthquake in 1931 destroyed much of Managua, and the December 23, 1972, earthquake destroyed 90 percent of downtown. Much of the city was later cleared and rebuilt.

- 1953The first missionaries arrived in Nicaragua.
- 1954The first convert in Nicaragua was baptized.
- 1959The first district, called the Nicaraguan District, was created.
- 1978Civil war forced missionaries to leave Nicaragua in September.
- 1981The first stake in Nicaragua was created in Managua on March 22.
- 1987A group of Church members traveled by bus to visit the Guatemala City Temple.
- 1989The Nicaragua Managua Mission was organized on October 15. Membership was approximately 3,500 at that time.
- 1990Membership in Nicaragua increased to 8,000 by the end of the year.
- 2010The Nicaragua Managua Mission was divided to create the Nicaragua Managua North and Nicaragua Managua South Missions.
