About the mission

The Paraguay Asuncion East Mission is connected with Asunción, the capital of Paraguay. Asunción is one of South America's oldest cities and the center of the country's government and culture.

Spanish and Guarani are spoken throughout Paraguay. Missionaries and families may hear both languages in daily life, Church meetings, and community settings.

A short history of the area

Juan de Salazar y Espinosa founded a fort at Asunción in August 1537 and named it Nuestra Señora Santa María de la Asunción. The city's official establishment dates to September 16, 1541. Asunción later became the center of a large Spanish colonial province.

Paraguay's independence movement took shape in Asunción. Leaders met at the home of Juana María de Lara, and rebels forced the governor to surrender on the night of May 14 to 15, 1811. Today, Asunción is the country's capital and the home of its Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches.

  1. 1948Samuel J. Skousen was set apart as a missionary in the South American Mission before serving as air attaché at the United States embassy in Paraguay.
  2. July 26, 1948The first branch in Asunción was organized, with Samuel J. Skousen as branch president.
  3. August 21, 1948Alberto Rodríguez, the first Paraguayan convert, was baptized.
  4. 1949Missionaries first arrived in Paraguay.
  5. 1950The Church obtained government recognition in Paraguay.
  6. 1979The Asunción Paraguay Stake, the first stake in the country, was formed.
  7. 2002The Asunción Paraguay Temple was dedicated.
  8. 2009The Book of Mormon was published in Guarani.
