The Peru Iquitos Mission is connected with Iquitos, a city in the Peruvian Amazon. Iquitos is surrounded by major rivers and is one of the world’s largest cities without road access.

A short history of the area

The area around Iquitos was inhabited for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples, including the Napeano and Iquito. Around 1757, Jesuit missionaries established a settlement called San Pablo de Napeanos along the Nanay River.

Iquitos grew into an important Amazon port during the rubber boom from 1880 to 1914. Peruvian Navy steamships arrived in 1864, and Iquitos became the capital of the Department of Loreto in 1897.

  1. July 1956An official Church branch was organized in Peru.
  2. AugustMissionaries began preaching in Peru.
  3. NovemberA Church building was purchased in Peru.
  4. 1959The Andes Mission was organized, with 300 members in five congregations.
  5. January 1988Seven stakes were created in one weekend during a visit by Elder M. Russell Ballard.
