A short history of the area
Edinburgh became a city in 1633. In 1707, the Acts of Union united Scotland and England in the Kingdom of Great Britain. Today, Edinburgh is known for its historic Old Town, elegant New Town, hills, and cultural festivals.
The Church here
- 1837The first overseas missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints were sent to Britain. They arrived in England on July 19 and preached in Preston on July 23.
- 1839Missionary work reached Glasgow in December, when Elders Samuel Mulliner and Alexander Wright arrived.
- 1840Orson Pratt organized the first branch in Scotland at Paisley on May 8.
- 1958The London Temple was dedicated, beginning a new era for Latter-day Saints in the British Isles.
- 1962The Scottish Mission opened, and the Irish Mission was organized on July 7.
- 1998The Preston Temple opened in June, near the site of the first preaching in Britain.
- 2010The Ireland Dublin Mission was combined with the Scotland Edinburgh Mission to form the Scotland/Ireland Mission, headquartered in Edinburgh.
- 2013The British Pageant, titled "Truth will prevail," was performed on the grounds of the Preston Temple.
- 2019RootsTech held its first family discovery conference outside Salt Lake City at London's ExCeL Convention Centre.
