About the mission

The Senegal Dakar Mission is based in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. Dakar sits on the Cap-Vert Peninsula along the Atlantic coast.

French is the mission language. Wolof is also widely used in Senegal, including in Dakar.

A short history of the area

The Cap-Vert Peninsula was settled by the Lebu people no later than the 15th century. Portuguese sailors reached the Bay of Dakar in 1444, and peaceful contact was opened by Diogo Gomes in 1456. A new Lebou village called Ndakaaru grew in the 17th century across from Gorée Island.

France established a military post at Ndakaaru in 1857 and called the settlement Dakar. Dakar became a separate commune in 1887, replaced Saint-Louis as the capital of French West Africa in 1902, and became the capital of independent Senegal in 1960.
