A short history of the area
The Romans redrew the town around 15 BC. In 801, Barcelona became the seat of the Carolingian Hispanic March. The County of Barcelona and Aragon joined through a dynastic union in 1137. Barcelona became the capital of Catalonia in 1931 and hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics, which led to the creation of 3 kilometers of beach along the seafront.
The Church here
- 1874Melitón González Trejo, a Spanish army officer, came to Utah to learn about the Latter-day Saints, was baptized, and helped translate the Book of Mormon into Spanish.
- 1950s–1960sThe first members of the Church in Spain were baptized, with many converts traveling to France because non-Catholic religious ceremonies were illegal in Spain.
- 1967Spain passed a law granting religious freedom.
- 1967An independent Spanish branch was organized in Madrid.
- October 1968The Church in Spain received legal recognition.
- June 6, 1969Four missionaries arrived from the North Argentine Mission to begin missionary work in Madrid.
- July 1, 1970The first mission in Spain was officially organized as the Spain Mission.
- July 1, 1976The Spain Madrid Mission was divided, creating the Spain Barcelona Mission and the Spain Seville Mission.
