A short history of the area
Philip II made Madrid the permanent home of the royal court in 1561, establishing it as Spain’s political center and capital. The city experienced major events during the Peninsular War and Spanish Civil War. Spain’s 1978 constitution confirmed Madrid as the capital.
The Church here
- 1874Melitón González Trejo, a Spanish army officer, came to Utah to learn about the Church, was baptized, and helped translate the Book of Mormon into Spanish.
- 1950s–1960sThe first members of the Church in Spain were baptized, with many converts traveling to France because non-Catholic religious ceremonies were illegal in Spain.
- 1967Spain passed a law granting religious freedom.
- January 7, 1968The first Spanish branch was organized in Madrid, with David B. Timmons as president.
- October 22, 1968The government of Spain officially recognized the Church.
- June 6, 1969The first full-time missionaries arrived in Spain after being reassigned from the North Argentine Mission.
- July 1, 1970The Spain Mission was organized and was later renamed the Spain Madrid Mission.
- 2022The Spain Madrid North Mission was created from areas of the Spain Madrid and Spain Barcelona missions.
