About the mission

The Portugal Lisbon Mission is based in Lisbon and serves in Portugal. Lisbon is the country’s capital and a major center for travel, culture, and history.

Portuguese is the main language missionaries and families will hear and use. English may be understood in some tourist areas, but simple Portuguese is important for daily life and teaching.

A short history of the area

Lisbon was settled by Pre-Celtic peoples, and the Castelo hill was occupied during the Iron Age. Archaeological evidence also shows a Phoenician presence dating to about 1000 BCE. The Romans later called the settlement Olisipo and made it a municipium.

Muslim forces took Lisbon in 711, and Afonso I of Portugal conquered it in 1147 with help from crusader knights. Lisbon became Portugal’s capital in 1255. On November 1, 1755, an earthquake destroyed about 85 percent of the city’s structures and killed an estimated 30,000 to 40,000 residents.

  1. 1950sUnited States servicemen assigned to Lajes Field on the Azores became the earliest known Latter-day Saints in Portugal.
  2. 1958A servicemen’s group was organized in the Azores.
  3. 1967The Lajes Branch, the first branch in Portugal, was organized.
  4. 1967Maria Morgado became the first known Portuguese convert baptized in Portugal.
  5. 1974The Carnation Revolution led to greater religious freedom, and Church representatives secured official recognition for the Church.
  6. November 1974The Portugal Lisbon Mission was formed with W. Grant Bangerter as president.
  7. 1975A branch was organized in Lisbon after missionaries began preaching in Portugal.
  8. 1981The Lisbon Portugal Stake was organized with more than 1,000 members.
  9. 1987The Church opened a second mission in Porto.
