A short history of the area
Philip II established his court permanently in Madrid in 1561, making it the political center and capital of Spain. Madrid remained the capital except from 1601 to 1606, when the court moved to Valladolid. Spain’s 1978 constitution confirmed Madrid as the capital.
The Church here
- 1874Melitón González Trejo, a Spanish army officer, came to Utah to learn more about the Latter-day Saints, was baptized, and helped translate the Book of Mormon into Spanish.
- 1950s–1960sThe first members of the Church in Spain were baptized, with many converts traveling to France because non-Catholic religious ceremonies were illegal in Spain.
- 1967Spain passed a law granting religious freedom.
- 1968The first Spanish branch was organized in Madrid on January 7, and the Madrid Branch became an independent unit on June 23.
- 1968The government of Spain officially recognized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on October 22.
- 1969The first full-time missionaries arrived in Spain on June 6.
- 1970The Spain Mission was organized on July 1, with its headquarters in Madrid.
