A short history of the area

Madrid began as a walled military outpost built during the second half of the ninth century under the Emirate of Córdoba. Alfonso VI of León and Castile conquered the city in 1083 or 1085, and Madrid was confirmed as a town connected to the Crown in 1123.

Philip II established his court permanently in Madrid in 1561, making it the political center and capital of Spain, except from 1601 to 1606. Madrid later experienced an uprising against French troops in 1808, served as a Republican stronghold during the Spanish Civil War, and was confirmed as Spain’s capital by the 1978 constitution.

1874Spanish army officer Melitón González Trejo came to Utah to learn about the Latter-day Saints, was baptized, and helped translate the Book of Mormon into Spanish.
1950s–1960sThe first members of the Church in Spain were baptized, with many converts traveling to France because non-Catholic religious ceremonies were illegal in Spain.
1967Spain passed a law granting religious freedom.
1967An independent Spanish branch was organized in Madrid.
October 1968The Church in Spain was legally recognized.
1970The Spain Mission was organized on July 11. It was later renamed the Spain Madrid Mission in 1974.
1976The Spain Mission was divided to create the Spain Seville and Spain Barcelona Missions.
1982Spain’s first stake was organized in Madrid on March 14.
