About the mission

The Texas Dallas North Mission is based in the Dallas area of Texas. Dallas is a major city in the northern part of the state, known as Big D.

Missionaries speak English and Spanish. Families can expect both languages to be part of daily missionary work and community life.

A short history of the area

John Neely Bryan surveyed the area around present-day Dallas in 1839. He returned in 1841 and established a permanent settlement named Dallas. The city was formally incorporated on February 2, 1856.

Rail lines helped Dallas become a major business and trading center in 1873. Dallas later became an important center for cotton, oil finance, transportation, and business in Texas.

  1. 1845Apostle Lyman Wight led a company of Latter-day Saints to central Texas.
  2. 1850sMissionaries preached in Texas.
  3. 1875Proselytizing resumed in Texas.
  4. 1952The first stake in Texas was organized in El Paso.
  5. 1984The Dallas Texas Temple was dedicated in October as the first temple in Texas.
  6. 1993Richard A. Searfoss of League City, Texas, became the first Latter-day Saint to pilot a space shuttle.
  7. 2008Church members responded to Hurricane Ike in Texas.
