A short history of the area
Rail lines helped Dallas become a major business and trading center in the late 1800s. The city later became an important center for the Texas and Oklahoma oil industry. Dallas is also remembered for the November 22, 1963, assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dealey Plaza.

- 1845Apostle Lyman Wight led a company of Latter-day Saints to central Texas.
- 1875Proselytizing resumed in Texas.
- 1952The first stake in Texas was organized in El Paso.
- 1984The Dallas Texas Temple was dedicated in October as the first temple in Texas.
- 1993Astronaut Richard A. Searfoss of League City, Texas, became the first Latter-day Saint to pilot a space shuttle.
- 2017Church members responded to Hurricane Harvey.
- 2021In June, the Church helped open the Houston Family Transfer Center with several Christian, charitable, and community organizations.
