A short history of the area

John Neely Bryan surveyed the area around present-day Dallas in 1839. He returned in 1841 and established a permanent settlement. Dallas was formally incorporated as a city on February 2, 1856. The origin of the city's name remains uncertain, with several possible namesakes.

Rail lines transformed Dallas into a major business and trading center in 1873. The city later became an important center for cotton and the Texas and Oklahoma oil industry. Dallas is now known by nicknames such as Big D, D-Town, Triple D and 214.

  7. 1993Richard A. Searfoss of League City became the first Latter-day Saint to pilot a space shuttle.
  8. 2017Church members responded to Hurricane Harvey.
