The Texas El Paso Mission is based in El Paso, in far west Texas near the United States-Mexico border. El Paso and Ciudad Juárez form a closely connected border region.

Missionaries speak English and Spanish. Spanish is especially useful in daily life across the border region.

A short history of the area

El Paso's regional history reaches back to 1598, when Spanish explorer Don Juan de Oñate stayed near the Rio Grande and celebrated a Thanksgiving Mass. In 1659, Fray Garcia de San Francisco founded El Paso del Norte on the river's south bank, in present-day Ciudad Juárez. After the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, the El Paso area became a temporary base for Spanish governance of New Mexico.

A military post called the “Post opposite El Paso” was established in 1849. The Compromise of 1850 placed El Paso on the Texas side of the boundary. Railroads arrived in 1881, and the city was incorporated in 1873.

  1. 1680The first Mass was celebrated at Ysleta on October 12. The Ysleta Mission remains the oldest continuously used church in the United States.
  2. 1682The Ysleta Mission was established in the El Paso area.
  3. 1850sMissionaries preached in Texas.
  4. 1875Proselytizing resumed in Texas after missionary work had come to a halt.
  5. 1952The first stake in Texas was organized in El Paso.
