A short history of the area
The city became Utah’s territorial capital in 1856 and the state capital when Utah achieved statehood in 1896. Salt Lake City is known as “The Crossroads of the West” and hosted the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
The Church here
- 1847The first wagon company of Latter-day Saints arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on July 24. Brigham Young declared it the “right place.”
- By 1859More than 60,000 Latter-day Saints had traveled to Utah, and they had established more than 350 communities in Utah and nearby states.
- 1877The St. George Temple was dedicated.
- 1884The Logan Temple was dedicated.
- 1888The Manti Temple was dedicated.
- 1893The Salt Lake Temple was dedicated on April 6 after 40 years of construction.
- 1975The Utah Salt Lake City Mission, the first mission in Utah, was organized on July 1.
