A short history of the area
Salt Lake City became Utah’s territorial capital in 1856 and the state capital when Utah achieved statehood in 1896. The city is known as “The Crossroads of the West” and hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics.

- 1847The first wagon company of Latter-day Saints arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on July 24.
- 1847Brigham Young designated the site for the Salt Lake Temple four days after arriving in the valley.
- 1853Construction began on the Salt Lake Temple.
- 1877The St. George Temple was dedicated.
- 1884The Logan Temple was dedicated.
- 1888The Manti Temple was dedicated.
- 1893The Salt Lake Temple was dedicated on April 6 after 40 years of construction.
