A short history of the area
Salt Lake City became Utah's territorial capital in 1856 and the state capital when Utah received statehood in 1896. The city is known as the Crossroads of the West and has hosted major events such as the 2002 Winter Olympics.

- 1847The first wagon company of Latter-day Saints arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on July 24. Brigham Young declared it the right place for the Saints to establish themselves.
