A short history of the area
The Alaska Railroad shaped Anchorage’s early economy. The 1964 Good Friday earthquake caused major damage, and the 1968 discovery of oil at Prudhoe Bay later shifted the city’s economy toward the oil industry. Today, Anchorage contains nearly 40 percent of Alaska’s population.
The Church here
- 1898The first members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came to Alaska with the gold rush.
- 1902Edward G. Cannon baptized K. N. Winnie in the Bering Sea near Nome, in what is described as the first known baptism in Alaska.
- 1913Church missionaries briefly visited Juneau.
- 1938The first official congregation in Alaska was organized in July.
- 1961The first stake in Alaska was organized in Anchorage on August 13.
- 1974The Alaska Anchorage Mission was organized on October 15.
- 1999A Church temple was built and dedicated in Anchorage.
