A short history of the area
Fort Edmonton was established in 1795 as a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post. Edmonton became a town in 1892, a city in 1904, and the capital of Alberta when the province was formed in 1905.
The Church here
- 1830Joseph Smith Sr. and Don Carlos Smith preached in towns and hamlets north of the St. Lawrence River.
- 1830–1850Approximately 2,500 Canadians joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
- 1883Simeon F. Allen and Heber S. Allen became the first known Latter-day Saints to enter what is now Alberta.
- 1886Charles O. Card received permission to investigate colonizing opportunities in southwestern Canada.
- 1933The first recorded Latter-day Saint meeting in Edmonton was held on February 26 in the home of Alfred and Mabel Strate.
- 1941Edmonton became the headquarters of the Western Canadian Mission, with Walter Miller as president.
- 1960A stake was organized in Edmonton.
- 1998The Canada Edmonton Mission was officially established on July 1, with Richard M. Andrus as president.
- 1999The Edmonton Alberta Temple was dedicated in December.
