About the mission

The Argentina Mendoza Mission is based in Mendoza, the capital of Mendoza Province in western Argentina. The city and surrounding area are known for Mendoza wine and the large urban area called Greater Mendoza.

Spanish is the mission language and the main language spoken in Argentina.

A short history of the area

Mendoza is the capital of Mendoza Province. The name Mendoza also refers to the province, the Mendoza River, a department, a wine region, and the city itself.

Greater Mendoza is the large urban conurbation around the city. Mendoza Province is well known for Mendoza wine, and Universidad de Mendoza is located in the city.

The Church here

1923Wilhelm Friedrichs and Emil Hoppe, two German immigrants, began preaching the gospel in Buenos Aires.
1925Apostle Melvin J. Ballard dedicated South America for the preaching of the gospel, and the South American Mission was established in December.
1935The South American Mission was divided into the Argentine Mission and Brazilian Mission.
1940The Church was permanently established in Mendoza.
1946Foreign missionaries returned to Argentina after having been withdrawn during the 1940s.
1966A stake was created in Buenos Aires.
1986The Buenos Aires Argentina Temple was dedicated.
1990The Mendoza Mission was organized.
2015A second temple in Córdoba was completed.
