A short history of the area
Yerevan was devastated by an earthquake in 1679 and received city status in 1879. It became the capital of the First Republic of Armenia in 1918 and again became the capital of independent Armenia on September 21, 1991.
The Church here
- 1885Mr. Vartooguian and three members of his family were baptized in Turkey, becoming the first Armenians to join the Church.
- 1937The Book of Mormon was translated into Western Armenian.
- 1988After a devastating earthquake in Armenia, Elder Russell M. Nelson presented a check for humanitarian aid through the Soviet ambassador.
- 1991The translation of the Book of Mormon into Eastern Armenian was published.
- 1992Mikhail Oskar Belousaov was baptized as the first man to join the Church in Armenia, followed by Nara Sarkissian as the first woman in Armenia.
- 1994The Yerevan Branch was organized on January 20.
- 1995The Church was registered in Armenia on December 22.
- 1999The Yerevan Armenia Mission, now known as the Armenia/Georgia Mission, was organized.
