A short history of the area
Kyiv was attacked by Pechenegs in 968 and was greatly damaged during the Mongol invasion of 1240. It later became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, became the capital of Soviet Ukraine in 1934, and was the setting for Ukraine’s declaration of independence on August 24, 1991.
The Church here
- 1990The first missionaries arrived in Kyiv in October.
- 1991The Kyiv branch was organized on June 9 with Valeriy Stavichenko as president. By the end of the month, the branch had 44 members.
- Early 1992The Ukraine Kyiv Mission was created with 35 missionaries, with Howard L. Biddulph as its first president.
- 1993The mission was divided to create the Ukraine Donetsk Mission.
- 2004The first stake of the Church in eastern Europe was organized in Kyiv.
- 2010Thousands of Saints gathered in Kyiv on August 28 to celebrate the completion of the Kyiv Temple. The temple was dedicated in several sessions the next day.
- 2018On July 1, the Ukraine Kyiv Mission became the Ukraine Kyiv/Moldova Mission.
