A short history of the area
Halifax County was dissolved in 1996. The Halifax Explosion was a Canadian maritime disaster in 1917, and Halifax was also the name of a bank founded in 1853.
The Church here
- 1830Joseph Smith, Sr., and Don Carlos Smith preached in several Canadian towns and hamlets north of the St. Lawrence River.
- 1830–1850Approximately 2,500 Canadians joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including members in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.
- 1833Lyman E. Johnson preached in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick with John Heriot.
- 1836Lyman E. Johnson preached in Saint John, New Brunswick, and later in Sackville, where he organized the first branch in the Maritimes.
- 1843The Halifax Branch was organized on November 14, with John Skerry as its first president.
- 1919The Canadian Mission was organized in Toronto to oversee missionary work in eastern Canadian provinces, including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
- 1920The Canadian Mission resumed proselytizing in Atlantic Canada.
- 1947The Halifax Branch was reorganized, and its first meetinghouse was completed ten years later.
- 1985The Dartmouth Nova Scotia Stake was organized, the first stake in the Maritimes.
