A short history of the area
Rancagua became important in Chilean history during the 1814 Disaster of Rancagua, when Chilean forces fighting for independence from Spain were defeated. Today, the city is known for copper mining, agriculture, wine production, and its connection to Santiago by highway and Metrotren railway service.
The Church here
- 1851–1852Elder Parley P. Pratt of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles served a mission in Chile.
- 1952Billie F. Fotheringham and his family moved to Chile, obtained permission for missionaries to enter the country, and petitioned the Church to establish a mission.
- 1956Missionaries arrived in Chile, and the Santiago Branch was organized.
- 1960Chilean Saints helped with disaster relief after earthquakes in Concepción and Valdivia.
- 1961The Chilean Mission was organized with 12 branches and 1,136 members.
- 1983The first temple in Spanish-speaking South America was dedicated in Santiago.
- 2001Chilean Saints were among the first to participate in the Perpetual Education Fund.
- 2004The Chile Santiago South Mission was renamed the Chile Rancagua Mission, effective July 1, with Kenneth L. Openshaw as mission president.
