A short history of the area
José Francisco Vergara founded Viña del Mar under its current name on December 28, 1874. A casino opened in 1930, helping make the city one of Chile’s best-known international resorts. Today, Viña del Mar is the most populous municipality in the Valparaíso Region.
The Church here
- 1851Elder Parley P. Pratt and his group arrived in Chile during an early missionary effort.
- 1952Billie F. Fotheringham and his family moved to Chile, secured permission for missionaries to enter the country, and petitioned the Church to establish a mission.
- 1956Missionaries arrived in Chile, and the Santiago Branch was organized. The first baptism service was held on November 25.
- 1961The Chilean Mission was organized with 12 branches and 1,136 members.
- 1972The first stake in Chile was organized in Santiago.
- 1979The Chile Viña del Mar Mission was organized.
- 1983The Santiago temple was dedicated, becoming the first temple in Spanish-speaking South America.
- 2004The Chilean government recognized the Church for its efforts to fight poverty.
