A short history of the area

Boise was founded in 1863 after gold was discovered around the Boise Valley. The United States military established Fort Boise near the Oregon Trail and roads leading to nearby mining areas. Boise became Idaho’s territorial capital in 1864 and was incorporated on January 6, 1868.

Today, Boise is known as “The City of Trees.” It has four distinct seasons, a cool semi-arid climate, and a growing metropolitan area. The city is also home to a historic Basque Block and Julia Davis Park.

  1. 1855Church President Brigham Young asked 26 early Church members to settle among Native Americans on the Salmon River.
  2. June 1855The settlers established Fort Lemhi.
  3. 1858The Fort Lemhi settlers left after problems with Native Americans.
  4. 1860Latter-day Saint settlers came to the Franklin area.
  5. 1888Ricks Academy was founded in Idaho.
  6. 1890Idaho received statehood. Latter-day Saints comprised about one-fifth of the state’s population.
  7. 1903Church authorities sent Joshua H. Paul and Melvin J. Ballard to Boise after local Latter-day Saint legislators requested missionaries.
  8. 1913The Boise Stake was organized.
  9. 1974The Idaho Boise Mission was created on July 1.
