About the mission

The Peru Chiclayo Mission is headquartered in Chiclayo and includes the regions of Lambayeque and Cajamarca. Chiclayo is near Peru’s northern Pacific coast.

Spanish is the mission’s main language. Missionaries serve in a warm, dry area shaped by coastal and highland landscapes.

A short history of the area

Chiclayo was first settled as an Indian reduction around the 16th century. Spanish Franciscan priests founded it as Santa María de los Valles de Chiclayo. The Cinto and Collique chieftains donated land for a Franciscan convent, and a royal decree approved the donation on September 17, 1585.

The Moche civilization occupied much of northern coastal Peru during the first through seventh centuries. Later, the Sican, or Lambayeque, culture occupied the area. Chiclayo became a villa in 1827 and a city in 1835. It is also known as the Heroic City and the City of Friendship.

1956Missionaries began preaching in Peru in August.
1956A Church building was purchased in November.
1959The Andes Mission was organized with 300 members in five congregations.
1980The first stake in Chiclayo was organized.
January 1988Seven stakes were created in one weekend during a visit by Elder M. Russell Ballard.
1993The Peru Chiclayo Mission was created and included the highland Andes bordering Ecuador.
2011The Peru Chiclayo Mission was reestablished after the area had been part of other mission arrangements.

Chiclayo is about 13 kilometers from the Pacific coast and is known as the Pearl of the North.
