About the mission

The Peru Lima South Mission is based in Lima, the capital of Peru. Lima is a large coastal city near the Pacific Ocean and the Rímac, Chillón, and Lurín river valleys.

Spanish is the main language for missionaries and local residents. Missionaries will use Spanish in teaching, worship, daily errands, and community life.

A short history of the area

The valleys around Lima were home to pre-Inca settlements, including the Maranga and Lima cultures. Pachacámac was an important pilgrimage center from the 3rd to the 15th century, and the area later became part of the Inca Empire.

Francisco Pizarro founded Lima on January 6, 1535, calling it the City of the Kings. Lima became the capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru in 1543 and the capital of the independent republic in 1821. During the War of the Pacific, the Chilean army occupied Lima from 1879 to 1883.

  1. 1956A Lima branch was organized on July 8 by Elder Henry D. Moyle, with Fred G. Williams as branch president.
  2. 1956Four missionaries arrived in Peru on August 7.
  3. 1959The Andes Mission was organized in Lima. At that time, there were five branches and 300 members.
  4. 1961The Andes Mission was divided to create the Chilean Mission.
  5. 1970The first stake in Lima was organized on February 22, with Roberto Vidal as president.
  6. 1977The Peru Mission was divided on January 1 to form the Peru Lima North and Peru Lima South Missions.
  7. 1988Seven stakes were created in one weekend during a visit by Elder M. Russell Ballard.
