A short history of the area
The Dutch were expelled in 1662, and Zheng Jing renamed the village Banlian-chiu in 1664. The Qing dynasty annexed Taiwan in 1684 and renamed the town Fongshan County. Taiwan was ceded to Japan in 1895, and the city was administered as Takao City beginning in 1920. On December 25, 2010, Kaohsiung City merged with Kaohsiung County to form a larger special municipality.
The Church here
- 1956Missionaries of the Southern Far East Mission studied Mandarin Chinese for several months before arriving in Taiwan.
- 1959The missionary force included ethnic Chinese members such as Koot Siu-yuen, also known as Nora, from Hong Kong, and Chiu Siou-ping, also known as Donna, a local convert.
- 1965The Book of Mormon was published in Chinese, with Taiwan serving as the center for the translation efforts.
- 1966Members completed the first chapel in Taipei.
- 1974Translators in Taiwan worked as part of an international team to publish the Chinese Doctrine and Covenants.
- 1976The Chinese Pearl of Great Price was published.
- 1976The Taiwan Kaohsiung Mission was created on July 1.
- 1976The first stake in Taiwan was organized, and Chang I-Ching became its first Chinese stake president.
- 1984The Taipei Taiwan Temple was completed.
