A short history of the area
Taipei became the capital of Taiwan in the late nineteenth century. Japan retained it as the capital after annexing Taiwan in 1895. In 1949, the Republic of China government relocated to Taiwan, and Taipei became its provisional capital. The city became a Yuan-controlled municipality in 1967.
The Church here
- 1956Four missionaries arrived in Taiwan on June 4 from Hong Kong, and the Taipei Branch was organized with Stanley Simiskey as its first branch president.
- 1959The missionary force included ethnic Chinese members such as Koot Siu-yuen from Hong Kong and Chiu Siou-ping, a local convert.
- 1965The Book of Mormon was published in Chinese, with Taiwan serving as the center for the translation efforts.
- 1966Members completed the first chapel in Taipei.
- 1969The Southern Far East Mission was renamed the Hong Kong-Taiwan Mission on November 1.
- 1971The Taiwan Mission was formed on January 1 with Malan R. Jackson as president.
- 1974Translators in Taiwan helped publish the Chinese Doctrine and Covenants, and the Taiwan Mission was renamed the Taiwan Taipei Mission on June 20.
- 1976The Chinese Pearl of Great Price was published, and the Taipei Taiwan Stake was created on April 22 with Chang I-Ch'ing as president.
- 1984The Taipei Taiwan Temple was completed.
