The Texas Austin Mission is centered in Austin, the capital of Texas. Austin sits along the Colorado River and has been the state capital since the early days of the Republic of Texas.

A short history of the area

People lived in the Austin, Travis County, and Williamson County area as early as 9200 BC. In 1730, three Catholic missions from East Texas were combined and temporarily moved to the south side of the Colorado River, in what is now Zilker Park.

In 1839, the Texas Congress selected the site for the new capital of the Republic of Texas. The settlement was briefly called Waterloo before being renamed Austin for Stephen F. Austin. Edwin Waller surveyed the village and created its original plan, and Austin was incorporated on December 27, 1839.

  1. 1844Joseph Smith's negotiations to purchase large areas of Texas as a gathering place for Church members were abandoned after his death.
  2. 1845Apostle Lyman Wight led a company of Latter-day Saints to central Texas.
  3. 1850sMissionaries preached in Texas.
  4. 1875Proselytizing resumed in Texas.
  5. 1952The first stake in Texas was organized in El Paso.
  6. October 1984The Dallas Texas Temple was dedicated as the first temple in Texas.
  7. October 14, 1993Richard A. Searfoss of League City became the first Latter-day Saint to pilot a space shuttle.
  8. June 2021The Church opened the Houston Family Transfer Center with several faith-based and community partners.
