A short history of the area
In 1731, 56 Canary Island settlers established the villa of San Fernando de Béxar, the first regularly organized civil government in Texas. San Antonio later became known for the Battle of the Alamo, the River Walk, and its five Spanish frontier missions, which became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015.
