A short history of the area
The city is near Utah Lake and is known by the nickname Family City USA. Utah Valley University is located in Orem, which also has a long connection to farming, transportation, education, and local community events.
The Church here
- 1849Brigham Young sent several dozen families to establish Fort Utah along the Provo River, bringing Latter-day Saints into the Orem area.
- 1883The Provo Bench Branch was created, with Franklin F. Carter as president.
- 1885The Provo Bench settlement became the Timpanogos Ward, with Peter M. Wentz as bishop.
- 1919The name Orem was chosen as the settlement's permanent name.
- July 1, 2015The Utah Orem Mission opened after being formed from the Utah Provo Mission and parts of the Utah South Salt Lake Mission.
- 2024The Orem Utah Temple was dedicated, marking a milestone in the area's long history of faith.
