A short history of the area
Fort Utah was renamed Provo in 1850, after French-Canadian trapper Étienne Provost, and Provo was incorporated that same year. A railroad reached the city in 1872, the Provo Woolen Mills opened, and heavy industry arrived with a steel plant in the 1920s.

- 1847The first wagon company of Latter-day Saints arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on July 24.
- 1849Latter-day Saint settlers established Fort Utah in the Provo area.
- 1850Fort Utah was renamed Provo, and the city was incorporated in April.
- 1877The St. George Temple was dedicated.
- 1884The Logan Temple was dedicated.
- 1893The Salt Lake Temple was dedicated on April 6.
- 1989The Utah Provo Mission was created in January, and operation began on January 20.
- 2002Utah hosted the Winter Olympic Games, with Provo's Peaks Ice Arena serving as a hockey venue.
