A short history of the area

Spanish Fork was visited in 1776 by Franciscan friars Silvestre Vélez de Escalante and Francisco Atanasio Domínguez, who followed the stream down Spanish Fork Canyon while seeking a route between New Mexico and California.

Latter-day Saint settlers arrived in 1851. William Pace led settlers who established farms in the Upper Settlement, while another group created the Lower Settlement along the Spanish Fork River. The city was incorporated on January 17, 1855. Spanish Fork later became the first permanent Icelandic settlement in the United States.

1847The first company of Latter-day Saint pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on July 24.
1851A branch of the Church was organized in Spanish Fork, with Stephen Markham as its first branch president.
December 1851Stephen Markham became president of the first Church congregation at the Lower Settlement.
1877The St. George Utah Temple was dedicated.
1893The Salt Lake Temple was dedicated on April 6.
2024Kerry B. and Alison C. Dickerson were listed as the mission president and companion for the Utah Spanish Fork Mission.
